Gene Therapy Shows Promise in Restoring Sight

In the early 1970s, scientists proposed a type of medical treatment most people never imagined possible—gene therapy. The idea was to take out a flawed gene and replace it with one that functioned properly, potentially eliminating and preventing otherwise untreatable hereditary diseases. Although sound in theory, the procedure proved much more complicated than it first appeared and scientists lacked the biological knowledge or technical expertise needed to perform such a precise surgery.
